As part of the UN Mappers Ambassadors initiative in Cameroon and in collaboration with OSM ENSTP, practical workshops on HeiGIT's Sketch Map Tool (SMT) were conducted: 1) an online training on 18 September 2026 and 2) in-person training with open drone imagery on 3 October 2026.

Our Mapper of the Month for October is Jacob Bray. Jacob is a social services professional from Canada, and one of our top contributors on the UNOWAS project who generated about 32km of roads that will be used for peacekeeping operations. We asked Jacob how he found out about UN Mappers, his motivations and experience in open mapping/OpenStreetMap and being part of the global community of mappers.

From Nairobi to the Map: How 19 Young Kenyans Spent Seven Weeks Changing What Climate Data Looks Like

In June 2026, UN Mappers Kenya launched its first ever Youth Climate Mapping Externship, a seven-week virtual programme designed to put real geospatial tools in the hands of young Kenyans and point them at real climate problems in Nairobi. Nineteen university students answered the call.

Myanmar OpenStreetMap (myOSM) initiative

Our Mappers of the Month for August 2026 is the Myanmar OpenStreetMap (myOSM) initiative! MyOSM community helped translate the OpenStreetMap educational materials on the UN Maps Learning Hub into Burmese.

We interviewed myOSM about their experience and motivation in ensuring accessibility of open mapping resources to support UN peacekeeping efforts as well as humanitarian preparedness, emergency response, and community resilience across Myanmar. Read below:

James Owornte MotM June 2026
Our Mapper of the Month for June 2026 is James Owornte from Nigeria. James is one of our new validation candidates and is our top validator for the Ceel Gadde roads project validating 52 tasks or almost 30% of the project. He is also one of our top mappers for the previous months, adding 35 km of roads.

Nairobi Drainage Map and Clean
Our UN Maps Community Ambassadors, Lucy Kago, together with UN Mappers Kenya and Young Lawyers Voice on Climate Change Foundation (YLVOCCF), led the activity "Nairobi Draining Map and Clean" using KoboCollect and ChatMap. They held training and cleaning activity, mapping 110 drainage points.

Los embajadores comunitarios de UN Maps prestarán apoyo a las actividades de cartografía y de acercamiento a la comunidad de UN Maps. Dirigirán y coordinarán la participación de las comunidades locales mediante iniciativas de desarrollo de capacidades y oportunidades de capacitación. A través de este proyecto piloto, esperamos obtener información sobre cómo podemos fortalecer un sistema de datos abiertos sostenible y gestionado por la comunidad, así como explorar la viabilidad de establecer secciones locales de UN Mappers y/o comunidades.
