The UN Maps Program is guided by the Strategic Board with operational support from the Technical Committee.
The Strategic Board is responsible for setting the vision and long-term strategy of UN Maps. It ensures alignment with the broader objectives of the United Nations, guiding technical and operational teams toward impactful and sustainable geospatial solutions. The Technical Committee plays a crucial role in translating strategy into action. It ensures that technical implementations align with the overall mission, oversees the performance of different units, and provides expertise to maintain high-quality UN Maps geospatial services.
The implementation of UN Maps' initiatives is driven by three key units: Data & Visualization, Crowdsourcing & Outreach, and Solutions & Support, with operational support from the Programme Support team. Each of these units plays a vital role in ensuring seamless operation and engagement.
The Data & Visualization team ensures the integrity and usability of geospatial data. Their responsibilities include data management, geo-design, validation (QA/QC), and feature extraction. They ensure accurate and high-quality map outputs for various applications.
The Crowdsourcing & Outreach team is responsible for promoting and improving community participation in mapping efforts, especially bringing together open mapping data enthusiasts and volunteers to collaborate in a coordinated manner with the OpenStreetMap ecosystem. They do this through community engagement, forming partnerships, branding and design initiatives, organizing mapping events, capacity building and leveraging social media for awareness.
The Solutions & Support team provides essential technical support through application development, database management, system administration, and infrastructure management. It ensures that mapping tools and platforms run efficiently and remain accessible to users.
