Learn with UN Maps

| YouthMappers Sri Lanka / Mapathon

Education is a cornerstone of the UN Maps initiative, designed to empower mappers with the knowledge and skills they need. Central to this effort is the UN Maps Learning Path, a structured schema that outlines available courses and expected outcomes. This path guides learners through various levels of expertise, from basic to advanced open geospatial information editing, open-source Geographic Information Systems and more.

Courses are meticulously crafted to ensure participants gain comprehensive knowledge and practical experience. Supporting this educational journey is the UN Maps Learning Hub, a multilingual online platform offering courses in multiple languages. This hub provides access to a wealth of resources on OSM and UN Maps features, making it an essential tool for anyone looking to enhance their mapping skills and contribute effectively to the UN's mapping initiatives.

UN Maps Learning Path

The UN Maps Learning Path is a schema to guide users on specific courses that can be undertaken within the UN Maps Learning Hub, the online learning platform of the UN Maps programme.

The schema covers different tracks depending on the audience.

  • UN Track: this course include a very basic OpenStreetMap editing to understand how to update the basemap information on UN Maps tools as a contributor. It then shows in depth how to use all the UN Maps features and tools, with intuitive videos and walkthroughts.
  • OSM Track: this course is designed for beginner UN Mappers, which can take the basic OSM course, or advanced UN Mappers, for which they will get knowledge about data validation and landcover mapping.
  • UN OpenGIS: not yet released, the goal is to give the possibility to access educational material covering open-source GIS software in collaboration with the UN-GGIM Academic Network.

UN Maps Learning Hub

The UN Maps Learning Hub is the all-in-one solution for your educational journey with UN Maps.

The platform is free and available to anyone. It requires the creation of an account in order to track your progress and it accepts any social media authentication commonly available.

Once authenticated, the user must enroll to the course they prefer. Some courses may be restricted to UN Personnel as it deals with tools that are not accessible to the general public. Users can test their knowledge through quizzes and tests and receive badges of participation.

The platform covers educational content in the six official languages of the United Nations (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish).

In case of any question regarding the usage of the UN Maps Learning Hub, you can contact the UN Maps Crowdsourcing Team via the UN Mappers Discord instance.
