This is Nitya, currently pursuing B.Tech in Computer Science at Delhi Technical Campus. I recently started mapping, but it quickly became an area of great interest to me. Through mapping, I discovered the value of contributing to open data and understood how platforms like OpenStreetMap can create a meaningful real-world impact. Alongside academics, I am also an active member of The FOSS Club, where I actively participate in community-driven and open-source initiatives.
I first came to know about UN Mappers through The FOSS Club at my college, where we recently organized a mapping and awareness session in collaboration with them. Although I was already familiar with humanitarian mapping and had been contributing to task-based mapping challenges through the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team for some time, the session gave me a much deeper understanding of the importance of mapping. Learning how mapping supports disaster response, development, and accessibility inspired me to become more actively involved with UN Mappers.
What I enjoy most about mapping is the sense of calm and focus it gives me. After a long and busy day filled with college work, assignments, and club activities, I often spend time mapping because it genuinely helps me relax and unwind. At the same time, knowing that my contributions can support humanitarian and social causes makes the experience even more meaningful. It feels rewarding to use my free time in a way that can positively impact communities and organizations.
I usually map during my free time, especially after returning home from college. Rather than spending time scrolling through social media, I prefer opening satellite imagery and exploring areas that can be mapped and improved.
