Bringing UN Mappers to universities and OpenStreetMap community

Submitted by michael.montani on

For the past weeks, the UN Mappers Team has been invited to speak to various community events. Read through our community engagements below:

UN Mappers x PoliMappers @ Politecnico di Milano, Italy

Last February, our Community Engagement Coordinator, Michael Montani, shared our work and the UN Mappers community with students of MSc in Geoinformatics Engineering from Politecnico di Milano and PoliMappers. It was a pleasure to speak alongside Ms. Federica Gaspari and Prof. Maria Antonia Brovelli. Thank you for inviting us!

Mapping HERizons: #AccelerateAction for Women’s Spaces (with UP Resilience Institute Youthmappers, Philippines)

We collaborated with UPRI Youthmappers to celebrate and champion women by mapping safe spaces for and with HER. Through this activity, students and participants learned about UN Mappers and how we are leveraging open geospatial data to support women, peace and security. Participants were also curious how the UN uploads field data in OSM and engage communities in its operations.

Our key takeaway is that while we ensure that women are safe, we must also ensure that they part of the process towards an inclusive and safe society.

UN Mappers at the OSMF Local Chapters and Communities Congress 2025

We joined the online gathering of #OpenStreetMap communities and contributors  last 15 March for the LCC Congress! The program started with a community around the world sharing, where UN Mappers shared its current mapping and community activities, and what is next to come!

We also listened as the OSMF presented what is currently going on with the Foundation, qnd participated in the OSMF Affiliation Models discussion.

It was a great time of exchanging ideas, and learn about the mappy initiatives of the various #OSM communities!
