Basemaps Made With MapLibre, Planetiler, Maputnik, and PMTiles

Oliver Wipfli - MapLibre (remote). Oliver Wipfli grew up in Switzerland and went to highschool near Basel with a focus on Music. After this he studied Physics at EPFL in Lausanne with an exchange year at Imperial College in London. For his Master studies, he went to Zrich and studied Quantum Physics at ETH Zrich. After a one-year stay in Boulder, Colorado for his master thesis project, he returned to Zrich to complete a PhD in the Trapped Ion Quantum Information research group at ETH Zrich. Oliver has a deep passion for hot-air ballooning. In 2011, he received a Balloon Pilot License and ever since he flies hot-air balloons on a regular basis in Switzerland. While building a hot-air balloon tracking device, Oliver made first encounters with online maps that were based on open-source technologies. This was how Oliver came in touch with the MapLibre community which over the years became an endless source of inspiration, a group of good friends, and a home.

In this talk, I will give an outline of the MapLibre Organization and our core map rendering toolkits MapLibre GL JS for web and MapLibre Native for iOS and Android. I will also highlight technologies of the vector tile ecosystem including the tile generator Planetiler, style editor Maputnik, and storage format PMTiles.
